Don Leslie capitalised on a principle called the “Doppler Effect”.
It’s why a train whistle seems to go down in pitch when a train passes you.
Don took a horn speaker and made it go around in a circle.
And Bingo! a legend was born.
The spinning horn gave the Hammond Organ what is called in the pipe organ world a tremulant. Vibrato, Tremolo, and a little “whoosh” of air all put together. It made the Hammond Organ sound completely different.
The Hammond’s life in all popular music-Jazz, Rock, Pop was born at that moment.

Hammond / Leslie 122 XB
The Classic Leslie Speaker, made to Don Leslie’s “Original Recipe”, same as it has been since 1941. This two-speed speaker uses a traditional tube amplifier with a heavy duty driver in the horn and special design 15” woofer for the bass rotor. Connections are made via the 11-pin plug found on all modern Hammonds, and certain clones. For older Hammond models, adapter kits are available. This optional interface panel is available with a ¼” “guitar cord” input, and a jack for a footswitch; thus eliminating the need for a bulky cable and “preamp box”
Hammond / Leslie Pedal
Hammond proudly announced in 2013 of their first-ever Digital Leslie Pedal. Designed and built in America, the Leslie Pedal allows the distinctive rotary, moving sound of a Leslie to be added to any, guitar, bass, keyboard, or studio rig.
Derived from the state-of-the art Digital Leslie onboard the new Hammond SK series stage keyboards and the flagship B-3 mk2 Organ, the Leslie Pedal evokes
vintage 122 and 147 Leslies, and the Model 18, basis of the classic Vibratone Guitar cabinet made famous by Stevie Ray Vaughan and others. The fourth model replicates the distinctive PR-40 stationary speaker cabinet, which was standard issue with Hammond Organs in the 50’s and 60’s, and a “secret weapon” for many vintage studio guitar recordings.
Rotary controls allow adjustment of virtual mic placement, ramp up and down speeds, overdrive, horn and bass balance, EQ and overall volume. Three footswitches provide true bypass, speed and brake control, stereo in/out. A gain switch allows the Leslie Pedal to be used in a guitar effects chain, or direct inject into a sound reinforcement system/keyboard amp
